D&D4E: Thunder Rift

Crowd Control

The party’s old friend Mayor Cambrine informed the party of a distressing letter from his cousin. She wrote of people that never existed, events that never happened. Cambrine suspected that this was a secret plea for help. The party agreed to go to Carrol to investigate.

Upon arriving in Carrol, the party began asking around immediately to Valerie‘s whereabouts. After making a scene, shouting about flagrantly, and generally informing everyone in town of their arrival, Valerie’s husband, Barnaby approached the party. Barnaby, annoyed with the party for not being more discrete, quickly shuttles them to his home, where they meet Valerie. The Great Zalesky conjured an illusion of an ogre in the town and disperses the crowd of onlookers.

Valerie and Barnaby recounted the tale of masked and robed men stealing their baby in the middle of the night. Without any clues or details as to the perpetrators, the party seemed to be at an impasse. However The Great Zalesky convinced Barnaby to undergo a hypnosis session to try to recount some helpful details. After hypnotizing Barnaby, the party learned of a man that Barnaby does not know but recognized his boots.

The party, with their same graceful discretion, marched right up to the front door of their suspect’s home. Naturally, a crowd began to gather again to see what the party was up to. Angus McAngur dwindled their numbers by playing his bagpipes off-key. Justifying their breaking and entering, The Great Zalesky conjured up the sounds of the ogre rampaging inside the home. Then, completely justified by her actions, Brasa completely destroyed the front door and made entry. Finding a locked chest, the party decides to continue down the brute force path. Brasa diminishes the chest to a pile of wood splinters and some thin metal binding.

As the party sorted through the incriminating evidence, the man appeared in the doorway. The party gave chase and Brasa captured the man in a headlock. Captured, the cultist gives up the location to the temple. The cultist managed to retrieve something from his pocket, uttered a warning as he placed the object to his lips, and disintigrated before their eyes: " The Eye has cast its gaze upon you. You will not last long."

The party, armed with the location of the temple, began its assault. A great entry hall opened before them, defended by the cultists. The first wave of cultists, after firing blinding and debilitating rays from wands, fell to the hands of the heroes…

Morale Compass

The party, after being well rested from their battle with the initial cultists, decided to explore the doors to the East and West before entering any of the ominous double doors to the north. The Great Zalesky disappeared in a puff of smoke. A little confused whether he was supposed to re-appear, the party decided to investigate the west door first. After listening at the door, and hearing clanking and scraping metal, the party formulated a rather barbaric plan. Following the lead of Genryusai Yamamoto, the party began dismembering the cultists’ bodies and retrieving heads.

Literally kicking the door in, Brasa led the party in to find a group of cultists in the middle of a meal. Continuing with their barbaric plan, the party threw the decapitated heads of their fellows at the unsuspecting diners. Thoroughly shocked, the party began the battle with a fury that matched their barbaric plan. The battle raged on and the party learned several of the enemies’ tricks, as Genryusai Yamamoto became dazed for a good portion of the battle. Angus McAngur made the costly mistake of trying to get away from one of the knights who had devoted his attention to Angus. After being knocked prone, Angus was forced to resort to punching the knight with his flaming spiked gauntlet. After 3 of the 4 cultists had been slain, the party uncharacteristically showed some humanity and offered the remaining Knight of the Unblinking Eye a chance to surrender. After declining, the party obliged the knight’s request to fatal combat.

Brasa after building up a hearty thirst broke into one of the casks of ale to celebrate their victory. Searching through the cultists, Balasar Dragonborn was able to find a magical heavy shield as a spoil of their hard-fought battle.

The party quickly rested up and continued their assault on the cultists. Backtracking to the main hall’s East exit, the party listened, and after hearing nothing, repeated their straight-forward plan kicking in the door. A slumbering group of cultists was found and another fight commenced. Now that the party had successfully battled some of the cultists, they were aware of some of the tricks that they could use. The party successfully used this knowledge to their advantage and neutralized the cultist threat.

The Unblinking Eye Closes for the last time

After finally revealing itself, the Unblinking eye unleashed its fury in full upon the heroes. The heroes were wounded, blinded, put to sleep, petrified, their flesh disintegrated in parts, terrified into running away, but they always returned to the fight. When things looked especially grim, and the party was nearly defeated, a death ray slammed into Angus. Like the epic pipers before him, he faced death head on, and played his pipes triumphantly as he laid the final blow, finally closing the Unblinking eye. The death ray however had done its work. Angus laid choking on the necrotic power that consumed his last breaths.

The party was given a chance for respite but as the epic heroes they are, they decided to continue on, battered and bruised. Choosing to investigate the now revealed secret passage off the main ritual chamber, the party discovered a passageway that led down into a treasure room that contained a single elevated chest. Expecting a trap, but brazenly taking their fate into their own hands, they strolled into the room completely being caught off guard by the gelatinous cubes laying in wait. A battle ensued where they were continually engulfed by the pair of acidic cubes. Balasar, opening the chest in the midst of the battle, triggered the trap that they had originally expected. A spear wall protruded from the floor, grazing him. Thinking to escape to a safer area in the hall outside, he sped to the door. However, unbeknownst to them, the trap was triggered by increased movement. Balasar found his final resting place at the tips of a spear wall that jutted up in front of him, blocking his escape. Escaping down the ladder, Brasa was able to find the mechanical workings of the trap and stop it before it could finish the party. With the trap out of commission, the gelatinous cubes melted away like butter to the party’s focused efforts.

With their haul of treasure, the remaining party returned to the main portion of the temple. Finding the ritualist’s chamber, Brasa did what any good barbarian would – she burned all of the tomes, scrolls, notes. In the same wing, they found a strange room where all of the kidnapped babies were being held in stasis cells. A blue curtain of light blocked their entrance to the room. Upon entering, a “trap” of sorts was triggered and several babies were destroyed by their stasis cells, healing Brasa. The babies were piled (in a catatonic state) on a bed and the survivors made their journey back to Carrol using the bed as makeshift cart.

When they finally reached the town, the babies began emerging from their catatonic state. Expecting to be greeted as saviors, the heroes were instead met with a show of force. The cult, devoted to the end, attacked the party. Lacking the power granted from the Unblinking eye, the cultists, feebly pointed ineffective wands at them. Brasa and Genryusai defeated the remaining cultists in a hopeless bloodbath. Valerie and Barnaby elated to have their newborn son returned to them, and overwhelmed by the huge group of orphans, took the infants to the town of Silverthal.

A summons to stop the undead

Mayor Cambrine, the epitomal employer summoned your party. As many times before, he laid out a plea of the people. There are rumors of a man who suddenly gained dark power and the ability to raise the dead. In a town this size rumors spread often about boogey men and things that go bump in the night, but there are well founded reports to back some of this up. Mayor Cambrine insists that you get to the bottom of this and put a stop to these nefarious happenings.
